During my time as a factory welder I would read how to become successful type books during my lunch period and breaks while at work.  I would also listen to audio tapes while traveling back and fourth to work in my car.  I can still remember my co-workers laughing at me saying that reading these materials and listening to these tapes was a waste of time.  (I think most of them are still making $9.00 dollars per hour doing the same dead end job.)
